PGA Tour Tales From Jacky Cupit
I wonder if any of the current
Tour Players have taken a yacht to a PGA Tour Event? In 1962, my
second year on Tour, a gentleman from Corona, California
contacted me about living in California. I am a good listener,
but not crazy about living in California. However, we made plans
to meet in Corona while I was playing the Sahara Pro-Am in Las
Vegas. He made me an offer to live in Corona, on his private
golf course, while I was playing the Tour full time. To make a
long story short, I took the deal and moved within 3 months!
He made the deal with 3 other Tour players, Bobby Nichols, Jim
Ferree and Bob McAllister. The 4 of us lived there while Billy
Casper played out of Mountain View Country Club. The owner, Al
Arnold, had a yacht he kept in San Diego and he, Bobby Nichols
and myself decided to take his yacht to the Bing Crosby Pro-Am
the following January. It is 459 miles from San Diego to
Monterey and it took us 24 hours to make the trip on his 125
foot yacht. What an experience!
